If you’re planning to paint stripes on your wall but don’t want to spend money on buying expensive wallpaper or hiring someone else to do it, try making your own striped wall with these simple instructions! The process is surprisingly simple and only requires two steps. Here's how to make stripes at home!
Tape off your top stripe
1. Use a pencil
and ruler to mark off the width of your stripe. For example, if you want to
make a stripe that is three inches wide, then you would measure three inches
from the bottom left corner of your piece of paper and mark it with a pencil.
2. On the right
side of your piece of paper, measure up one inch and mark it with a pencil.
Repeat this step on the top side as well.
3. Draw a line connecting the two marks you made on either side of your rectangle (one inch in from each edge) so that they meet in the middle to create four triangle sections within your rectangle: one in each corner and one on either end along the left edge.
5. Fold over the bottom left corner of your paper up to the
first marked point on the left side. Do not unfold again until you have
finished marking all four corners and edges.
6. Tape down all
five points marked with tape except for the last taped point which will be
taped down when it has been used.
7. Measure out two inches from where your first vertical line meets its second counterpart horizontally, taping down when you reach this point after measuring out both sides; cut both lines between these points using scissors or a hobby knife; unfold again to see how long your stripes are!
If you’re happy with them, fold over the bottom left corner of your paper up to the first marked point on the left side. Now cut out your pieces and place them next to each other vertically, securing them together by overlapping them slightly. Using scissors or a hobby knife, trim off any excess fabric and carefully separate them into individual strips. Hang them up somewhere and voila! Striped curtains without having to go through the hassle of making them. One way is to purchase coordinating fabrics and use the same techniques as above - although more likely the height of your stripes will need to be shortened since you can't stretch fabric across the entire length of a window frame.
You can also buy
pre-made bias tapes in matching colors for about $3-5/yard and attach them to
an existing curtain panel. To do this, simply press open one seam of the
curtain panel and insert a strip of bias tape approximately one inch away from
the raw edge on either side. Sew closed, finishing off with a row of decorative
stitching. Measure out two inches from where your first vertical line meets its
second counterpart horizontally, taping down when you reach this point after

Paint over the
tape with a paint roller
First, tape off the area where you want stripes. I prefer to use painter's tape since it doesn't leave any residue behind and is easy to remove when you're finished. Next, paint over the taped-off area with your chosen paint color. When you're finished painting, remove the tape and let the paint dry completely before removing any of the dried paint from your walls. If you don’t wait for the paint to dry, there’s a chance that little bits of latex will get on your floor or furniture. You can also make vertical stripes by taping horizontal lines across your wall and then painting in between them with a roller or brush.
For example, if you wanted three stripes of blue paint, simply measure out four feet on one wall (or however long you want the first stripe to be) and then mark two more strips about two feet apart below it. Keep going until you have all the stripes that you need. And don’t worry—if you make a mistake, just put some new painter's tape down and start again. While this post was made for making stripes on the walls, you can do this same technique with fabric as well. Tear some white cloth into strips and pin it to the surface where you want your stripe pattern (for curtains, bedding, etc.). Paint over the cloth after taping it up securely.
When you're done painting, remove the fabric strip
before it dries and allow everything to fully dry before unpinning. The best
time to work with this type of striped fabric would be during the night so that
it has time to dry overnight. The last thing you want is wet stripes dripping
down your furniture and staining the couch. Once your paint or fabric has
dried, cut away excess material. Remember to clean your brush with soap and
water so that it won't damage the other pieces of clothing in your closet while
it's drying. To keep anything from happening while you're waiting for things to
dry, place some heavy books on top of each other under the open bookcase door
propped against the wall. It'll prevent drafts from ruining your hard work
while you do something else.
Remove tape
Making stripes at home is actually pretty easy. First, you should make sure that your paint is thoroughly mixed so that you're not getting streaks or brush marks. Then, tape off the area where you want your stripes to be and use a roller to paint the entire surface of that area. Use a different color of paint (or more than one color) to make your stripes in different widths and then take off the tape before the paint dries. You can also use stencils with pre-cut shapes to create striped patterns on flat surfaces like walls or furniture. If you want to add pops of color, go ahead and mix up some new colors by combining two or three together.
Once the paint is all dry, remove the tape and admire your work! Now you have an ombre dresser with four vibrant shades or a zebra-patterned wall without ever having to buy a painting kit. The options are endless and these steps only took about 15 minutes! First, cut out masking paper for the area you plan to stripe. Paint half of it with one color and let it dry completely before removing the masking paper. Now choose another color and do the same thing again. Continue doing this until you've reached your desired length. Remember to wait for each coat of paint to dry before moving on to the next step.
If you want full
coverage, just keep going until all areas are painted; if you prefer less
coverage, leave some blank space along the edges and fill in any gaps after
everything has dried. Finally, once all of the stripes are complete, remove the
masking paper. Sit back and enjoy your handiwork!
1. Paint your
nails a solid color.
2. Wait for the
first coat to dry. 2a) If you're impatient like me, you can use a blow dryer on
the nails to speed up this process.
3. Use tape in
the shape of an X over your nail bed, and paint over the top with a second
color that is lighter than the base color (e.g., if your base color is black,
then use white).
4. Remove the tape after the painting has dried and enjoy your new striped nails!
5. You can make different patterns by using different colors or by using other shapes of tape.
6. For example, triangles will give you different colored stripes while rectangles will create horizontal stripes only.
Play around with it and see what looks good for you! Try combining different-shaped tapes to create cool stripe patterns! The sky is the limit when it comes to making these designs at home - have fun with it! The sky is the limit when it comes to making these designs at home have fun with it! Be creative with how you design your nails and find something that suits your personality.
One way to do this is by
experimenting with different colors; one day try yellow and green, the next day
blue and purple, or even orange and pink! Another way to do this is by layering
two colors of polish – think about which colors would look best together:
blue/green, purple/yellow, pink/red? Once you've created a design that catches
your eye just follow steps 1-3 again until complete. So there are no more
excuses because anyone can make these easy striped designs at home! All you
need are some basic supplies from the dollar store or beauty supply store and
voila, gorgeous nails every time.
